LAS VEGAS – Four Idaho men’s tennis players won their first two singles matches to reach the round of 64 on the first day of the ITA Mountain Regional tournament, while two Vandal doubles pairings reached the round of 16.
Artemiy Nikitin won 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 128 and 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 64 in his singles matches, and Jose Bendeck cruised 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 128 and 64, respectively, to reach the round of 32. Cristobal Ramos Salazar also had two straight-set wins to reach the third round, while Odon Barta had to battle his way with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win in the round of 128 and a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win in the round of 64 to stay alive in the main draw.
“The guys had a really good day overall,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “Some of the wins were some battles and others were just guys going out and taking care of business. I’m looking for the guys to get loose and put in strong performances in the consolation.”
Barta and Nikitin won a pair of doubles matches to reach the round of 16 in doubles, while Bendeck and Ramos Salazar had an opening-round bye before winning 8-3 to advance to the round of 16. Idaho has won the doubles draw at the tournament the last two seasons.
