|Bendeck, Salazar reach quarters|
LAS VEGAS – Idaho’s doubles pairing of Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos Salazar advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Mountain Regional men’s tennis tournament on Friday while Bendeck and Artemiy Nikitin fell in round of 16 singles action.
“I am proud of how the guys competed today, win or lose,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “I feel we learned where we need to be in the spring from the matches today.”
Bendeck and Ramos Salazar got their second straight doubles win after a round of 64 bye in the draw, and will face New Mexico State’s Thomas Douglas and Naveen Manivannan for a chance to reach the semifinals.
Both Bendeck and Nikitin’s singles losses came in three sets, as Nikitin fell 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to an opponent from New Mexico, and Bendeck lost 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to his Nevada counterpart.
The doubles quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, and the championship match will be Sunday. An Idaho duo has won the doubles draw in this event the last two years.
