Women open strong in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. – The Idaho women’s tennis team got off to a strong start at the Bulldog Classic hosted by Fresno State, as Almudena Sanz and Bety Flores each went 2-0 in singles and all three of Idaho’s doubles pairings won their opening round matches.

Flores advanced to the semifinal of Flight F with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Oregon’s Kadie Hueffner and a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cal Poly’s Bryn Barcharach. Sanz won in three sets of Portland State’s Sabina Preda in the A&B Flight Round 1 and 6-3, 7-6 over Sherif Ahmed of Fresno State in Round 2.

Victoria Lozano, Galina Bykova and Belen Barcenilla each went 1-1 in singles in the first two rounds of play. Rita Bermudez and Bykova teamed up for an 8-3 win in Flight A opening round doubles, while Barcenilla and Flores teamed up to beat a Fresno State pairing in their opening round match in Flight B. Paired with a Portland State player, Lozano also won her opening round doubles match.

In all, Vandal players and duos went 10-4 on the day. The tournament continues through Nov. 3., and is the final event of the fall for the Vandal women.
