|Bloom Honored by WAC|
DENVER—University of Idaho sprinter Andrew Bloom was named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, for Feb. 17-23, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Bloom, a senior from Walla Walla, Wash. (Walla Walla H.S.), competed Saturday at the WSU Open II for the Vandals and won the 400m with a time of 48.62. Bloom will be ranked second in the conference in the 400m going into the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships this week.
“Andrew has had an awesome senior year and it is great to see him be rewarded for all his hard work,” director of track & field Wayne Phipps said. “He has been very consistent this year and is ready for a huge breakthrough race in the 400m.”
The Vandals, in their final season in the WAC, will host the conference Indoor Championships starting on Wednesday. The meet will kick off with the women’s pentathlon at 12 p.m. PT and the men’s heptathlon at 12:45 p.m. The first field finals events will begin in the afternoon on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. PT with the men’s weight throw. The track prelims get underway Thursday at 4:00 p.m. PT, with the finals in the 5,000m and the distance medley relay beginning at 7:25 p.m. PT.
Field finals will start at 10:30 a.m. PT on Friday and the track finals will begin at 12:30 p.m. PT. The awards and trophy presentation will follow the 4x400 relays, which are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. PT on Friday.
