Just hours after playing in the final spring scrimmage for the University of Idaho football team, Mike Marboe and Maxx Forde traded their jerseys and helmets for jackets and ties.

And, possibly, have a glimpse of what their futures will hold in the annual VIEW competition in the School of Business and Economics.

With patents pending on their projects, they were limited in the details they could reveal – but they weren’t limited in their enthusiasm for the cash awards they received. Marboe’s team (P.E.R.C.H.) was second and Forde’s (Dual Droppers) was third – both in the Innovative Ventures division.

“It was cool,” said Marboe, whose team collected a total $5,000 of which half will go back into developing their product with the remainder split among the team’s seven members. Forde’s team collected a total $1,500, with the same caveat that half of the award be returned to the project.

Both agree lessons learned on the field provided a valuable skill set in working within the framework of a team as well as having to make quick adjustments to their plan between rounds.

“Being exposed to more definitely helps,” said Forde, who will be a senior defensive end on the 2014 football team. “Teamwork is the biggest one. Everyone needed to know everything that was going on.”

Marboe, who will be the Vandals’ senior center this fall, said knowing how to make decisions and adjustments on the fly was critical.

“It was just like in football; we had to make instant decisions,” he said. “I felt comfortable in that scenario. I felt like a leader because it’s something I’m used to doing.”

They partnered with students not only from the College of Business but also the College of Engineering to develop the products for real-world applications. The two-part competition included the Business Plan Presentation and an Elevator Pitch Competition, with cash awards given in each competition.

“Teamwork,” Marboe said, “it’s all teamwork.”
