|Three Vandals on Athlon first team|
Five Vandals were mentioned by Athlon Sports on its preseason all-Sun Belt Conference teams. Seniors Mike Marboe, Dezmon Epps and Quayshawne Buckley are first-team choices, while senior Maxx Forde and sophomore Austin Rehkow are second-team honorees.
Marboe heads into the 2014 campaign as a three-year starter with 36 successive starts at center for the Vandals. A native of Wenatchee, Wash., he is a three-year member of the Rimington Award watch list which recognizes the nation’s top center.
Epps, of Sacramento, Calif., was Idaho’s leading receiver in 2013 with 980 yards, which includes three games of more than 100 yards with a high of 175 against Old Dominion. He totaled 1,416 all-purpose yards after covering 283 on kickoff returns, 138 on punt returns and 15 on carries. He was a member of the Biletnikoff Award watch list.
Buckley, from Ontario, Calif., led the Vandals in tackles for loss with 16 (-62 yards) and sacks with seven (-45 yards). He had 46 total tackles with 38 of those solo stops.
Forde, from Woodinville, Wash., was the Vandals’ fourth-leading tackler with 63 total stops (44 solo and 19 assists). He also had nine tackles for loss (-39 yards) and 5½ quarterback sacks for -28 yards. He had four quarterback hurries – all vs. Temple.
Rehkow, from Veradale, Wash., was the nation’s leading punter in 2013 and a member of the Walter Camp All-American Team. His average of 47.8 yards per kick was an NCAA record for a freshman and the best ever by a punter who kicked 75 or more times in a season.
