|Soccer Kicks Off Fall Camp|
MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho soccer team wrapped up its first day of fall training on Wednesday. The team will be holding morning and afternoon practices in preparation for the season opener Aug. 22 at Seattle U.
“Everybody was a little anxious this morning to get out and play but it was much better this afternoon after we got one practice under our belt,” head coach Derek Pittman said. “As practice wore on this afternoon there were better decisions being made, the tackles and the competitiveness increased. It was exciting to see.”
With 11 newcomers and 14 returning players the biggest task for first-year head coach during fall camp is figuring out exactly what the team has to offer.
“We have to figure out where everybody is going to fit on the field, allowing us to produce a winning lineup,” Pittman said. “Everybody will have a part to play and we will figure that out now and ease into the double days with a lot of playing – that is what every player loves to do.”
With only two seniors and four juniors the Vandals are comprised of a large group of sophomores and freshman. Pittman believes this young team will add a great deal of enthusiasm to the year.
“Having 19 underclassmen on the team is definitely exciting for us," Pittman commented. "I think it is nice because they have a lot of athleticism and overall strength. I think they are going to bring a lot to the table this season.”
Returning senior Emily Ngan is excited to be back on the field for the 2014 season.
"It was really exciting and a lot of us have been talking about it," Ngan said about being back on the field. "Preseason is the setting stone because what we do now could set us up for conference."
Idaho will play its Silver & Gold game on Sunday at 5 p.m. PT, at Guy Wicks Field. The Vandals open regular season play with a road match Aug.22 at Seattle U. Idaho’s first regular season home match is Aug.24 against Texas Christian.
