SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Idaho played a hard fought battle Friday night, but in the end could not contain Seattle U. After playing to a 1-1 regulation tie, the Redhawks broke through in the extra time to take the season opener.

Seattle U (1-0-0) found its tempo early on in the match, forcing a penalty kick in the 11th minute to snag the early lead. Idaho (0-0-1) answered back in the 29th minute with a corner kick from sophomore Elexis Schlossarek to fellow sophomore Alyssa Pease who challenged the goal keeper for the 50/50 ball, tapping it in to tie the game.

With 10 minutes left in regulation Seattle U launched the ball towards the net, sophomore keeper Torell Stewart snagged the ball off the foot of Natasha Howe, saving a sure goal.

“I thought today went exceptional, our players came out and executed our game plan very well,” head coach Derek Pittman said. “I am extremely proud of our team’s effort and mentality throughout the game.”

The Vandals had their chances at the end of regulation with junior JP Burgess who had two shots on goal, one coming on a one-on-onesituation with the goal keeper Brianna Smallidge.

Seattle U totaled 16 shots with six making their way to the goal, while Idaho managed to fire five shots onthe net.

“We always have three or four goals every game and one of those goals is our defensive organization,” Pittman said. “For long periods of the game we did a good job communicating, talking and defending as a team.Unfortunately at the end of the game we lost our mark on the cross and they were able to put it in.”

The Vandals are back in action in their home opener Sunday against Texas Christian University. It will be the first time Idaho and TCU have met of the field.

Sunday’s match in set for 1 p.m. at Guy Wicks Field
