Coming Up This Week:

After spending the first six weekends of the outdoor season on the road, Idaho will play host this weekend with the Vandal Jamboree on May 8-9 at the Dan O’Brien Track & Field Complex. This week’s meet will be the team’s final tune-up before next weekend’s Western Athletic Conference Championship meet, and will be the first time Idaho fans get to see the Vandals in action at home.

Last year, this meet featured plenty of good marks, with none better than Melinda Owen’s NCAA season-best and WAC-record pole vault of 14-5. Also at the meet, Mike Carpenter cleared 17-1 to break the men’s pole vault record and Matt Wauters launched the hammer 210-0, which was a school record at the time. Some Vandals to keep an eye on are Beau Whitney, a junior who earned an NCAA Regional mark in the discus throw at this meet last year, Heather Bergland, a senior who ran a season-best 14.17 in the 100m hurdles last weekend, and Idaho’s three-headed monster at men’s pole vault of juniors Mike Carpenter and Lucas Pope and freshman Jeremy Klas. Carpenter and Klas have hit Regional marks, while Pope, the reigning indoor and outdoor WAC pole vault champion, could easily hit the NCAA standard this weekend.

Weekly Honor Roll:

Senior Jake Boling and freshman Jeremy Klas became the ninth and 10th Vandals to regionally qualify last weekend.

Boling earned his fourth consecutive Regional trip in the hammer throw with a fourth-place toss of 187-8 at the Pelluer Invitational on Friday. The senior from Port Orchard, Wash., currently ranks eighth in the WAC in the event. Klas, a freshman from Moscow, Idaho, cleared 16-6 in the men’s pole vault on Friday to win the event and set a new Woodward Field (Eastern Washington) record in the event. His vault is also tied for best in the WAC with teammate Mike Carpenter, and is an improvement on his third-best all-time vault at Idaho.
