Four Vandals get WAC honors

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Four Idaho volleyball players earned Western Athletic Conference postseason honors Sunday night, as the league held its annual awards banquet on the eve of the conference tournament.

Outside hitter Allison (Walker) Baker earned first-team All-WAC recognition for the third season in a row, and joining her on the first team was sophomore middle blocker Alyssa Schultz. Senior middle blocker Alex Sele earned second-team All-WAC honors for the second straight year, and freshman outside hitter Katelyn Peterson earned WAC All-Freshman team honors.

Baker ranked second in WAC matches in both kills and points, with 4.09 kills per set and 4.65 points. She also averaged 2.79 digs and 0.76 blocks per set and hit .199 during league play. She had a total of 20 double-doubles on the season, including a streak of five straight to end the regular season. Baker earned WAC Player of the Week honors once during the regular season, after she averaged 5.33 kills, 2.44 digs, and 0.56 blocks per set while hitting .245 in a pair of wins over Texas State and UTSA.

Schultz joins Baker on the first team after ranking second in the WAC with 1.66 blocks per set and seventh with a .341 hitting percentage. She also added 2.19 kills per set and 13 service aces in WAC play. Schultz had career-highs in 2012 with 15 kills on Aug. 30 against Cal Poly, a .750 hitting percentage on Sept. 13 against Denver and nine total blocks on four occasions. Schultz was a WAC All-Freshman team selection after the 2011 season.

Sele is a second-team All-WAC selection for the second straight season as she finished her Idaho career by hitting .377 in WAC matches to rank third, while adding 2.25 kills and 0.97 blocks per set during conference play. Sele had a career-high 13 kills on two occasions in 2012, hitting .500 or better in both matches.  She had 13 kills with just one error on 24 swings to hit .500 in a win over UTSA on Sept. 29, and had 13 kills with no errors on 23 swings, hitting .565 in a win over UT Arlington on Nov. 10. Sele hit .403 with 2.50 kills, 1.10 blocks and 3.15 points per set during Idaho's final eight matches of the regular season.

Peterson averaged 1.82 kills per set and hit .142 in WAC play in her freshman campaign at Idaho. She had a career-high 17 kills on Oct. 20 in a four-set win over San Jose State, hitting .308 in that match. Her career-high .400 hitting percentage, seven kills and one error on 15 attempts, came in Idaho's season finale at New Mexico State. She had double-digit kills in five matches for Idaho.

The second-seeded Vandals open the WAC tournament on Monday as they face Texas State in the quarterfinals. The winner of that match will advance to face the winner of (3) UTSA vs. (6) San Jose State in the semifinals on Nov. 22. The WAC Championship match is Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. Pacific, and will be broadcast on national television live on ESPNU.
