SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Idaho swimming and
diving team completed an historic run at the Western Athletic Conference
Championship Meet Saturday with another individual title, Paige Hunt’s Diver of
the Year honors, and the Vandals’ best finish at the conference finale.
Idaho, behind freshman Jamie Sterbis’ Saturday victory in
the 200 butterfly, accumulated 409 points to finish fourth – up from seventh
last season and more than double its point total from two years ago. Adding to
the glory were two NCAA B cut times by sophomore Rachel Millet.
“The meet went great,” coach Mark Sowa said. “This was an
historic night and a big step forward for our program.”
Hunt was third in Saturday’s platform diving competition but
her year-long consistency coupled with her 3-meter WAC title and her 1-meter
WAC runner-up propelled her to diving’s top honor. Her 234.30 points are an
Idaho record on the platform. It was one of 12 Idaho records to fall during the
four-day competition.
“Like all meets,” Sowa said, “we had some great performances
and we had to grind though some swims, too.”
Throughout the ranks, the Vandals found the points they
needed to tally a school-best 409. San Jose State won the meet with 695 with
Northern Arizona second with 688 and Denver third with 631.5. in fifth behind
the Vandals was New Mexico State with 331.5, Northern Colorado with 289, North
Dakota with 230, Cal State Bakersfield with 188 and Seattle University with
144.
The Vandals found points throughout the roster. In addition to
Sterbis’ victory in the 200 fly and Hunt’s third on the platform, Idaho had
scoring Saturday in the 200 back from Janelle Stacy (11th); in the
200 breaststroke from Kelsie Saxe (10th), Lyndsay Williams (14th)
and Melissa Kirby (16th); Kori Ungaretti (16th) in the

Monks (16th) in the 100 free; Mairin Jameson (8th) and
