OTTAWA - University of Idaho men's cross country and track athlete Barry Britt was selected on Monday to represent Athletics Canada at next month's North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships.

Britt, a Vandal sophomore who earned first-team all-Western Athletic Conference and USTFCCCA All-Region honors earlier this year, was one of five Canadian men selected to run the 8,000m course in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, Feb. 19.

Britt finished seventh overall and sixth among Canadian athletes at Canadian Cross Country Championships in November to earn a spot in the selection pool, and learned of his selection this week.

"Since I was in high school, I've always wanted to represent Canada," Britt said. "It's an amazing feeling - it's such an honor to represent your home country."

In his first season with Idaho cross country, Britt enjoyed a breakout year. He posted a team-record 8k time of 24:00.28 in a seventh-place finish out of 239 runners at the Charles Bowles Invitational, and was the top Vandal finisher in three of the team's six competitions, and was the team's No. 2 finisher in the other three.

He was also honored on Oct. 16, 2010, with his first career WAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor.

While this will be the fourth time Britt has donned a Canadian uniform, it will be the first as a senior competitor. He competed in the 2008 and 2009 NACAC Junior Cross Country Championships and the 2009 Pan Am Junior Track & Field Championships for Canada.

"I've been on a lot of national teams and I am always impressed by the energy condensed when a young athlete puts on the Canadian uniform. These squads are talented, they're focused and they'll race together as true teams." Canadian national team coach Dave Scott-Thomas said in the Athletics Canada official release. "Full credit to the athletes and their personal coaches for working through the cool twilight of a Canadian winter and blasting into the Caribbean sun."
