MOSCOW, Idaho – An ad in the University of Idaho student newspaper this week declared cryptically ‘Change is coming’ and the buzz caught the attention of Idaho Vandal fans and many others. Change now has arrived, in the midst of homecoming, Vandals can now ‘throw the V.’

“This is about Vandals connecting with other Vandals, showing their pride and building a tradition,” said Rob Spear, director of athletics. “We are the only Vandals in the nation and our pride in who we are and what we represent is unsurpassed. That’s what the ‘V’ symbolizes: as an institution we are unrivaled in the impact we have on our great state of Idaho and beyond. Our students come here to lead and succeed.”

Enduring hand signals aren’t new to collegiate athletics. The University of Texas is long-famed for its Longhorns logo depicted by the ‘hook ‘em horns’ hand signal – a gesture that is a powerful affiliation symbol.

Vandal supporters around the state now will ‘Throw the ‘V,’ as well as wear it to signal their Vandal pride – a creative and energized look that connects the Vandal family.

“The gesture and its graphical ‘V’ treatment are intended specifically for our Vandal family,” Spear said. “We heard from fans – passionate about their alma mater, who wanted something distinctive. We listened, we created and we licensed this to represent our university.”

The new eye-catching ‘V’ logo will be available on Vandal athletics merchandise, which includes jerseys, polos and caps. The ‘V’ does not replace the long-standing ‘I’-Vandals logo. Additionally, an ‘Idaho Vandals’ block font has been added to the university’s family of logos. To access the current ‘V’ product line, visit
