University of Idaho junior golfer Kayla Mortellaro (Phoenix, Ariz.) is the seventh-ranked amateur in the world by The R&A (The Royal and Ancient).

Mortellaro, who has been recognized eight times by the Western Athletic Conference as a golfer of the week or month, is the third-ranked American. Using the ranking system, her points average is 1416.67.  Arkansas' Emily Tubert is fourth at 1447.22 with Louisiana State's Megan McChrystal just ahead of Mortellaro in sixth with her 1420.00.

"Kayla's world ranking is a testament to her talent and consistent play," coach Lisa Johnson said. "She has strong physical and mental abilities that are beyond that of most amateur players."

Johnson said Mortellaro's ceaseless drive for excellence is another trademark.

"She is a tireless worker," Johnson said. "Even with all of her great accomplishments, she always is finding ways to improve.

"She is a tough competitor and a wonderful person both on and off the course."

Japan's Mitsuki Katahira is No. 1 and is followed by New Zealand's Cecilia Cho and Lydia Ko, Tubert and Ireland's Leona Maguire in fifth.
