Mortellaro, Poplawski strong in opening rounds

University of Idaho juniors Kayla Mortellaro and Teo Poplawski are tied for third and 14th, respectively, but the other Vandals struggled during the opening two rounds of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational and Idaho is 12th with 18 holes to play in the annual event.

Mortellaro had rounds of 72-73 for a 145, three strokes back of first-day leader Carlota Ciganda of Arizona State. Poplawski's 76-75--151 put her in a tie for 14th.

Idaho is at 626 for the tournament after rounds of 164 by Rachel Choi (tied for 78th), 166 by Julia Hitchins (tied for 88th) and 181 by Gracie Schory (106th). Allyssa Nilsson, playing as an individual, is at 171 and tied for 100th.

Arizona State leads the tournament with a 586 after rounds of 293-293. Notre Dame is second at 591.
