Cassie McKinley, a senior at Shorewood High School
(Shoreline, Wash.) this spring, has signed a scholarship agreement to attend
the University of Idaho and play for the Vandal golf team.
“We are pleased Cassie chose the University of Idaho,”
Vandal coach Lisa Johnson said. “She is an excellent student and golfer.”
McKinley, who has her senior season left to compete, was a
first-team all-Wesco choice as a freshman, sophomore and junior. She was
rewarded with the league’s Most Valuable Player honor as a junior after winning
the league’s divisional title and finishing third at the state championship
tournament.
She qualified for the state tournament throughout her high
school career. As a junior, she was the medalist in five of six high school
tournaments and was her team’s MVP as well as an Everett Herald Athlete of the
Week. Additionally, McKinley was the runner-up in the 2011 Seattle Junior Open
and was the medalist of the 12-team Whidbey Shootout.
She also competed in basketball, soccer and volleyball, and excels
in the classroom (three years in the honors math program).
Her diligence in working on her game enabled her to trim her
handicap from a low “double digits” to a 3.3 as she enters her final high
school season.
“This off-season, she worked diligently with her teaching
professional to fine tune her game,” Johnson said. “She is a very coachable
athlete and has a fun, upbeat personality. She’ll be a great fit with the team.”
