DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference honored 54 University of Idaho student-athletes with WAC All-Academic awards for the 2011-12 winter sport season on Tuesday.

The awards recognized student-athletes competing in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, women’s gymnastics and women’s swimming and diving. To be eligible, an athlete must have competed in 50 percent of the team’s contests and hold a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average. Freshmen and transfers from all sports will be honored in May, along with the spring sports.

The 54 honorees are an increase by 20 over last season’s winter total. Combined with the 43 fall WAC All-Academic honorees from men’s and women’s cross country, football, soccer and volleyball, Idaho has already claimed 97 academic awards this year from the conference.

Vandal women’s and men’s indoor track and field led their sports among WAC schools with 20 and 13 selections, respectively, while swimming and diving also added 13 honorees. Of Idaho’s 54 total selections, 41 are repeat honorees.

The WAC honored a total of 263 student-athletes in the six sports on Tuesday.
