FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Idaho women’s golf team had its best round of the spring and had three players in the top 12 to climb two places into fifth at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.

“We’re putting significantly better,” coach Lisa Johnson said. “We made a lot of birdies on the front nine. We didn’t have anything higher than a bogey today.”

The Vandals managed to elude the dreaded ‘others,’ – scores higher than a bogey, in making the move up the leaderboard.

“Our ball striking was very good today,” Johnson said. “Today we just made more putts.”

Leilanie Kim had a closing round 74 to finish at 224 and in 11th. Rachel Choi had the Vandals’ best round of the tournament with a 71 for a 225 to match Kristin Strankman and tie for 12th. Strankman had a 75 during her final round. Cassie McKinley tied for 45th at 233 and Kaitlyn Oster tied for 53rd at 235.

The Vandals had a 907 to finish fifth out of the 14 teams. Long Beach State won the tournament with an 892 with Tulsa at 893, San Jose State at 896 and UC Irvine at 903. Long Beach’s Simone Hoey was the medalist at 211.
