|Vandals seeded 16th|
The University of Idaho women's record-setting golf team is headed to the NCAA West Regional May 6-8 at the Stanford University Golf Course.
The Vandals, who finished third in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, are seeded 16th in the 24-team regional event. UCLA is the No. 1 seed with Alabama second, Arizona third, Ohio State fourth, Virginia fifth, and host Stanford sixth. San Jose State is the other WAC team in the field and is ranked 14th.
"We're really excited to have set this benchmark for the future," said coach Lisa Johnson, whose team was third by just two strokes at the WAC Tournament.
Johnson said the opportunity to continue their seasons is important to the Vandals, who were not satisfied with their conference finish.
"It will be a challenge but we believe, if we play our best, we can advance to nationals," Johnson said.
There will be carry over from the WAC tournament.
"We definitely learned that every shot matters," said Johnson, who is preparing her team for its trip to nationals by playing their home courses as long as possible. "We learned it is extremely important to have four solid scores counting every round."
Eight teams and two individuals from each of the three regional tournaments advance to the May 18-21 NCAA Championship at the Country Club of Landfall.
