|Klas earns WAC award|
DENVER - University of Idaho pole vaulter Jeremy Klas was honored by the Western Athletic Conference on Tuesday as its Verizon Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after clearing the nation's eighth-best height over the weekend.
Klas, a junior from Moscow, Idaho (Moscow HS), opened his 2011 season with a winning vault of 17-2.75 (5.25m) at the Cougar Indoor on Friday. He was just two centimeters short of the meet record in the event.
After two weeks of competition in the conference, Klas holds the WAC's top spot in the pole vault by a margin of more than one foot, and the competition was his sixth in a row with a 17-foot vault.
Klas and the rest of the Idaho men's and women's track and field teams will be in action this weekend at Seattle, Wash., at the UW Invitational. At this competition last season, Klas eclipsed the 17-foot barrier for the first time in a second-place tie.
The meet runs Friday and Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor facility.
