DENVER - Idaho sophomore post player Alyssa Charlston has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 26-Jan. 1. This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor of her career.

The Sammamish, Wash., native earned all-tournament team honors at the Montana Invitational after averaging 18.0 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and 71 percent shooting from three-point range, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks as the Vandals went 1-1.

Charlston had a career-high 30 points in Idaho's one-point loss to Southern Miss on 10-of-16 shooting. She went a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range in the game and hit 5-of-6 free throws. Her 30 points are the most by a Vandal this season, as are her five three-pointers and 10 field goals made in a game. She opened the week with six points, six rebounds and two blocks in 19 minutes of action in Idaho's win vs. North Dakota, despite sitting the final 18:31 of the first half after two quick personal fouls.

Charlston leads the Vandals in scoring and rebounding with over 12 points and eight rebounds per game.

"Last year Alyssa was a role player with four really good seniors on the team," Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. "This year we're counting on her a lot more as a leader and she has really come into her own."

Charlston and the Vandals return to action with two home games in the Cowan Spectrum this week. Idaho hosts North Dakota on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. tipoff, before welcoming Seattle University to the Spectrum on Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m.

"We're getting better every week," Newlee said of his team. "We're a work in progress, but we are a lot better basketball team than we were when the season began."
