MOSCOW, Idaho – Five University of Idaho women’s soccer players were honored last week with National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America Scholar All-West Region Team.

“The West is a huge region and it has some very good academic schools,” Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. “To have five players selected out of 50 be from the University of Idaho is a huge compliment to their hard work and to them embracing the ‘student’ and the ‘athlete.’”

Five Idaho juniors were mentioned on the list, with forward Chelsea Small earning First Team honors, midfielder Jill Flockhart claiming Second Team accolades and midfielders Amber Pimley and Megan Lopez, and defender Lauren Layton earning Honorable Mention status.

Small, a Secondary Education major from Solana Beach, Calif. (Torrey Pines HS), holds a cumulative grade-point average of 3.96. She led Idaho in shots, goals and points for the third-consecutive season and this year broke Idaho career records in goals (31), points (74) and shots (313), to go along with her record for career game-winners (12). She is a three-time First Team All-Western Athletic Conference honoree and was the 2011 WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

Flockhart is an International Studies major from Salmon Arm, B.C. (Salmon Arm Secondary) who holds a cumulative 3.78 GPA. She is a two-time First Team All-WAC honoree and a 2010 NSCAA All-West Region pick. She led Idaho in 2011 with six assists and ranks fourth all-time at Idaho with 11 career assists. She also has five career game-winners, good for second all-time at Idaho, and a team-best .138 career shooting percentage.

Pimley, a Food and Nutrition major from Camarillo, Calif. (Adolfo Camarillo HS), holds a 3.69 overall GPA. Primarily a defensive mid, she was the unlikely hero in Idaho’s first-ever WAC Tournament win when she scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over San Jose State for her first career multi-goal game and first career game-winner.

Layton is an International Studies major from Spokane, Wash. (Mead HS) with a 3.81 cumulative GPA. She is Idaho’s active leader and ranks second all-time with 14 career assists, three of which came this season. She dished up the 200th assist in program history in the 3-2 win over Montana on Sept. 4. She was a 2010 Second Team All-WAC selection.

Lopez is a Biology major from Oceanside, Calif. (Rancho Buena Vista HS) who holds a cumulative 3.64 GPA. The center mid has five career goals, seven career assists and 17 career points. She was second on the team in 2011 with 15 shots on goal, and she scored the game-winner on a header against Montana on Sept. 4.

In addition to the five individual honors, the Vandal team posted a combined 3.46 team GPA in 2010-11 and earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award with the highest team average in the WAC.

“We thank all the staff who support them in their endeavors, but it comes down to them studying and working tirelessly to have fantastic grades,” Showler said. “We’re doing very well on both sides of the ball right now, and that’s great to see as a coach. It shows that we’re recruiting the right type of player and also that they’re working their socks off on and away from the pitch to make themselves better.”
