|Mortellaro wins ninth collegiate tournament|
University of Idaho senior Kayla Mortellaro had a closing round 75 to move into the lead and capture her ninth career collegiate victory – in the same tournament that marked her first collegiate victory four years ago.
“We are extremely proud of Kayla for notching her ninth career victory as a Vandal,” said coach Lisa Johnson after Mortellaro’s closing round 75 put her at five-over 221 – one stroke better than first-day leader Brittany Henderson of Coastal Carolina and Alice Kim of Gonzaga.
“She played well in tough conditions this week and earned the victory.”
The Vandals finished sixth with a 933, while Texas A&M won the event at 901 followed by UC Davis at 305 at the 54-hole event at Hawai`i’s Kanoehe Klipper.
“The team was fairly consistent throughout all three rounds,” Johnson said. “We had a little trouble around the greens, which cost us a few shots, but we know we need to work on our short game.”
Also for the Vandals, Kaitlyn Oster tied for 36th at 236, Teo Poplawski tied for 39th at 237, Rachel Choi tied for 49th at 239 and Leilanie Kim tied for 60th at 243.
