|Vandals to scrimmage Saturday|
MOSCOW, Idaho – Robb Akey’s wish list, for Saturday’s scrimmage anyway, is short and simple: “I want to see guys make plays.”
“I want to see guys play hard,” said Idaho’s head football coach as the Vandals head into their second scrimmage of the spring (Saturday, 10 a.m., Kibbie Dome). “I want to see guys finish. I want to see the coaches step back. I want the players to play.”
It’s an opportunity, too, for the players to impress the coaches and work their way toward the top of the depth chart. For the quarterbacks, the work during practices has been centered around juniors Taylor Davis and Dominique Blackman. For the offensive line, the story is different. With a host of players hobbled with injury, a core group has been taking the bulk of the reps every practice.
“They’re working their tails off,” said Akey, pointing to the rep-after-rep efforts of freshmen Dallas Sandberg and Cody Elenz as well as the increased load being carried by sophomore center Mike Marboe. “The more we’re able to rep these guys, the more it’s going to start to fit and those things are going to come together.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Akey is seeing an intense battle between a veteran corps of linebackers – seniors Robert Siavii, Conrad Scheidt, Homer Mauga and Su`a Tuala. All have impressed but so, too, has the younger generation, which not only adds depth but variability to what the Vandals can do.
The Vandals conclude spring drills next week with practices Tuesday and Thursday and the Silver and Gold Scrimmage Friday at 6 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome. A social at the University Inn-Best Western immediately follows the scrimmage.
