|Four Vandals earn honors|
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Four Idaho men's tennis players were selected to the Western Athletic Conference all-tournament team, as the Vandals took home a second-place finish in the event.
Jose Bendeck earned the nod in singles, while he and Cristobal Ramos Salazar were selected to the all-tournament team at No. 1 doubles. Abid Akbar and Andrew Dobbs were selected to the team at No. 2 doubles.
"It was a great tournament for them to be recognized for their accomplishments," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said of the honorees. "I'm really proud of them."
Bendeck won a three-set match at No. 4 singles in the semifinals against Hawai'i that clinched Idaho's 4-3 victory. His No. 4 singles match in the finals against Fresno State was in its third set, but went unfinished as the Bulldogs clinched the overall match 4-2.
"He was struggling during the year to pull out any wins at one point," Beaman said of Bendeck. "But he stuck with it, improved his fitness, and to be the one to clinch the match against Hawai'i and put himself in position to clinch against Fresno State, shows how his work paid off."
Bendeck and Ramos Salazar went 1-1 at No. 1 doubles, falling 8-5 in the semifinals before an 8-5 in the championship match against Fresno State. Akbar and Dobbs went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-5 against Hawai'i and 8-3 against Fresno State. The Vandals won the doubles point in both matches.
"For our doubles teams to go out and beat Fresno State so convincingly in the finals was great," Beaman said. "We could have had our No. 3 doubles team on the team as well with their win over Hawai'i and getting ready to clinch the match against Fresno State. It was just a great job by our doubles teams overall."
