NEW ORLEANS – University of Idaho track and field had nine individuals honored early in the week and on Thursday, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recognized both the Vandal men and women with its Division I All-Academic Team designation.

Idaho’s women tallied a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average, while the Vandal men posted a 3.22 GPA to earn the honors. The Idaho women have been honored with the team award in each of the last six seasons, while the men’s team has earned the award in the last five.

“This award means a lot to our program,” Idaho director of track & field/cross country Wayne Phipps said on Friday. “We have a team goal every year of being over a 3.0 GPA, so when we achieve that, it’s a huge checkmark for our program.”

The award is given annually to teams with cumulative GPAs of 3.00 or better. In addition to sweeping both the indoor and outdoor Western Athletic Conference titles in 2012, the Vandal men also posted the top GPA among conference members.

“When you combine that with the three WAC championships, the Stan Bates Award for Markus Geiger, the Joe Kearney Award for Andrew Blaser, our three All-Americans and all the other accolades, you really couldn’t ask for a better season for our programs,” Phipps said.

Idaho’s men were among 85 teams nationally honored, while the USTFCCCA honored 171 women’s programs.
