|Vandals gearing up for Fresno State|
The Vandals topped Temple 26-24 to win their Homecoming game and improve to 1-4 on the season in a game during which redshirt freshman quarterback Chad Chalich threw for 310 yards and rushed for 114. Idaho takes on Fresno State, which is undefeated at 4-0 and comes into Saturday’s game ranked #21 by USA Today and #23 by the Associated Press. The Bulldogs are the first ranked team to play at the Kibbie Dome since Nov. 12, 2010 when #4 Boise State was the visitor.
Paul Petrino is in his first season at Idaho and his first as a head coach. While it is his first head coaching job, it is not Petrino’s first stint at Idaho. His coaching career began at Carroll College (his alma mater, 1989). From Carroll, he went to Idaho where he coached running back, receivers and special teams from 1992-94. From Idaho it was on to Utah State (1995-97), Louisville (1998-99), Southern Mississippi (2000-02), Louisville (2003-06), Atlanta Falcons (2007), Arkansas (2008-09), Illinois (2010-11) and Arkansas (2012).
tim deruyter is in his second season at Fresno State. He was the interim head coach at Texas A&M in 2011 after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2010. He is a graduate of the Air Force Academy, where he played linebacker. After graduating from the Academy, he coached there from 1991-94 before going on to Ohio (1995-98), Navy (1999-2001), Ohio (2002-04), Nevada (2005-06) and Air Force (2007-09).
Idaho is playing the 2013 season as an FBS independent before rejoining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. The Vandals have been independent previously – 1893-1907 and 1959-62. There are six other independent FBS programs – Army, BYU, Navy, New Mexico State, Notre Dame and Old Dominion.
This is the 15th game between the Vandals and the Bulldogs. Fresno State leads the series 10-4. The teams first played in 1946 and meet periodically until 2005 when the Vandals joint the Western Athletic Conference. They last played in 2011 – a 48-24 victory by Fresno State at the Kibbie Dome.
