|Vandal soccer gets one more|
MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Idaho head soccer coach Pete Showler announced the addition of one more player to the 2012 newcomer group on Friday in Meli Cortez of Salem, Ore.
Cortez is a 5-2 central midfielder and three-time Oregon 6A All-State honoree from South Salem High School. She led the Saxons to four consecutive Central Valley Conference titles from 2008-11 and was a four-time First Team All-CVC honoree and four-time First Team All-Marion County selection during that span.
“She plays with great vision, executes passes very well, has a fabulous aggressive mindset and is your typical hardworking 'box to box' midfielder,” Showler said. “Meli scores goals as an added strength and will add an extra dimension in the midfield mix”
During her time at SSHS, the team went undefeated in league play and advanced to the Oregon 6A state quarterfinal round twice (2008, 2010) and the semifinals twice (2009, 2011). She was a four-year varsity starter and 2011 team captain. She was named Second Team All-State in 2009 and 2011 and Honorable Mention All-State in 2010 as a junior.
“Meli is a great addition to the Vandal family,” Showler said. “She comes from a strong regional club program.”
She has competed for the Oswego Southside Soccer Academy (OSSA) club program, where she is team captain, as well as the team’s scoring leader.
“A true student of the game, Meli is the player every coach wants,” OSSA club coach Alan Cox said about Cortez. “She has a true soccer brain that is matched by her ability. I am looking forward to following her college soccer career at the University of Idaho.”
Cortez will join Idaho in the fall as a freshman. She joins Idaho’s three other additions, forward Reagan Quigley, midfielder JP Burgess and defender Josie Greenwood, who signed National Letters of Intent last week.
