MOSCOW, Idaho – Vandal women’s soccer started its spring schedule on a high note Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Montana on the Idaho SprinTurf practice field.

Idaho scored once in the first half, then again midway through the second and held solid possession throughout the match, which comes after less than one full week of Spring practices for the team.

“The girls have worked seven or eight weeks in the weights, gym and conditioning,” Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. “They were so excited to play and it showed in that performance. We settled down and moved the ball well, and there was a lot of communication.”

Midfielder Jill Flockhart got things going for Idaho late in the first half when she sent in a cross that fellow mid Erica Hart flicked off a defender and into the net. In the second half, it was Christina Boddie rising above the defense to head in a Lauren Layton corner.

“We had a great crowd in here, it was a great atmosphere, the weather was just fantastic, and the girls showed up and played,” Showler said. “I can ask for no more than that.”

Goalkeepers Caroline Towles and Liz Boyden – who is coming off a broken leg sustained in Idaho’s third game last fall – split time in front of net and each made saves and managed the game well. Showler platooned his lineups by half and said he was very pleased that the level of play stayed the same, regardless of who was in the game.

“You change things up the level doesn’t drop, and it’s been that way,” Showler said. “Everyone pushes everyone else in practice, in conditioning and in the weight room.”

With one game in the books, Idaho now has a three-week gap before its next competitive action, when the Vandals host Gonzaga at the SprinTurf field on Sunday, Mar. 25, at 12:30 p.m. (PT).

“Winning always helps your confidence go up, but the team knows we have a lot more to work on at this point,” Hart said. “We have a win, but we can’t just be content with that.”
