This Week's Opponents: Texas State (3-7-1)
Texas State is 3-7-1 this season and holds a 2-3-0 record in home matches this year, including last week’s 6-0 victory over Texas Southern. The Bobcats are outshooting their opponents this season by a 13.5-10.9 margin. The team has also earned 46 total corners. The team’s six-goal outburst last Friday ended a streak of four scoreless matches. Junior goalkeeper Natalie Gardini has seen the most minutes in goal and has a .756 save percentage, along with a 1.27 goals-against average.
UTSA is 1-7-0 overall with a pair of one-score road losses in its last two outings at Houston and Miami (Fla.). The Roadrunners are averaging 10.2 shots per game and giving up 17.5 to their opponents. Opponents are also averaging 2.50 goals per game against UTSA. The team’s five goals this season have each come from a different player, while the Roadrunners’ five assists have come from four players. Freshman keeper Katarina Pus leads the team in GK minutes at 667 and has 46 total saves on the year for a .719 save percentage. UTSA averages the second-most fouls per game in the WAC (10.50) and has the second-most yellow cards (8).
Team Notes: Vandals vs. WAC Newbies
The series history this weekend is very easy to compile - because it’s nonexistant. Idaho has never played the two new WAC members. Furthermore, Idaho has never played a member of the Southland Conference, from which both TXST and UTSA came. Idaho’s last match in the state of Texas was in 2007, when the Vandals lost at UTEP and beat North Dakota State at the UTEP Border Shutout at El Paso, Texas. The only other Lone Star State opponent Idaho has played is North Texas, two times in 1998-99.
Consecutive Starts Record
Idaho seniors Chelsea Small (F), Megan Lopez (MF) and Jill Flockhart (MF), have started every game of their Idaho careers, 74 in a row and counting. If they start both matches this weekend, the trio will break Idaho’s career starts record. With three more games played, they’ll surpass that career record, as well.
Setting the New Standard
Idaho’s 1-0 shutout of Utah Valley on Sept. 21 gave the team’s 2012 seniors 34 combined victories. That total makes them the winningest four-year group in program history and surpasses the standard of 33 wins from the 1998-01 senior class. That class can also stake a claim to the first conference tournament berth in school history and the first postseason win.
