|Barone nabs WAC honor|
DENVER - Idaho big man Kyle Barone had back-to-back double-doubles last week and came one point shy of a career-high when he scored 26 in a win against Texas State, and Monday he was honored with his second Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week selection of the season and fourth of his career.
Barone, a 6-foot-10 senior center from Garden Grove, Calif. (Pacifica HS), recorded 13 points and 15 rebounds in a 74-56 loss at UTSA. He connected on 6-of-11 shots from the field and also dished out three assists against the Roadrunners.
He scored 26 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in a 90-81 win at Texas State. He also tallied three blocks and two assists, hit 12-of-17 shots from the field and was a perfect 2-of-2 at the free throw line in that game. His 26 points against the Bobcats was his eighth 20-plus point outing of the season, and one point shy of his career high of 27 points.
On the week, Barone averaged 19.5 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. He shot 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the field.
Barone will play his final game in the Cowan Spectrum on March 9 when the Vandals welcome Seattle U for Senior Night. Barone and fellow seniors Mike McChristian, Mansa Habeeb and Wendell Faines will be honored before the game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
