The Vandal women’s Soccer team started spring ball Saturday on the SprinTurf with an impressive 4-0 win over North Idaho College.

“We use the game to test how the practices have gone,” Coach Showler said. “The practice is where we put those things into fruition and try to get it to come out in the game itself and a lot of good things came from that.”

The Vandals started the game with an early goal and didn’t let off the pedal the entire game, scoring twice in each half.

“The girls played with a lot of confidence, with a smile on their face and we competed everywhere,” Showler said. “A team like North Idaho College is going to come in here and try to rattle us and play physically. They tried to do that and we handled it well and played good soccer.”

The Vandals start the season with a new goalkeeper, Marina Siegl, and she showed a lot of promise with a shutout in her first game.

“It’s always nice to have a new goalkeeper come out and get that shutout in her debut,” Showler said. “Big strides are being taken because the monkey is off our back in terms of nerves.”

With not a lot of time to prepare, Showler is please about the way his team played today and he can see the hard work paying off.

“Goals are coming from people taking shots and following them in and they’re getting the fruits of their labor,” Showler said. “It was a top notch, polished performance based on how little we’ve trained in those areas. It’s pleasing to see.”

Showler is pleased about the way the team played, but there are a few things that they need to work on.

“We played very narrow so we’ve got to exploit the width a little bit more, but its early and those things will come,” Showler said. “The key thing was how confidently the kids played as individuals and as a team and it showed in the overall buoyancy and attitude in the game.”
