|Vandals Set for Aggies, 'Roos|
MOSCOW, Idaho—The Idaho Vandals look to stay perfect in Western Athletic Conference play this weekend. Idaho will play host to New Mexico State on Friday and UMKC on Sunday at Guy Wicks Field.
“We are looking forward to getting two wins on Homecoming,” head coach Pete Showler said.
The Vandals are coming off their first win of the season, defeating Grand Canyon 3-1 last Sunday. Junior midfielder Katie Baran led the team with three points (1g, 1a) and freshman Alyssa Pease scored her second goal of the season. The Vandals are 31-0-1 all-time when they score three or more goals.
New Mexico State (4-5-1, 1-1-0 WAC) will be coming to Moscow after opening up the WAC season with a weekend split with UMKC. The Aggies dropped last Friday’s road match, 3-0, but turned around on Sunday and pulled out a 2-1 win over the ‘Roos. Offensively the Aggies are led by senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol and junior forward Layla Todd with five points each in 10 games. Keeper Jessica Schutter leads the conference with three shutout-victories. Idaho hold the series lead 2-1-1 over the Aggies. The last meeting between the two schools resulted in a 3-1 Idaho and propelled the Vandals into the WAC tournament.
“We do not know a whole lot about them [NMSU],” Showler stated. “They are always very athletic and very physical. We just have to come out and counter act that and come out and play our game.”
UMKC (4-5-1, 1-1-0 WAC) will be making its first trip to Guy Wicks Field on Sunday. The two teams have not matched up in past season. Kansas City has only one common opponent with Idaho on the non-conference schedule. They dropped a home match to Creighton, 1-0, back on Sept. 10. The ‘Roos are have relied on the foot of senior Taylor Bare in 2013. Bare, the school’s all-time point leader, has recorded seven points (3g, 1a) this season.
Friday’s match against NMSU is set for 4:00 p.m. PT, helping kickoff the Homecoming weekend. The Vandals will meet UMKC at 1:00 p.m. PT on Sunday.
