PHOENIX—The start to the second half of the Western Athletic Conference schedule did not bring kind results to the Idaho Vandals on Sunday. Grand Canyon was able to fend off the Vandals late offensive push to gain its second win of the season, 2-0.

Freshmen Alyssa Pease and Kaysha Darcy both recorded two shots on the day and starting keeper Marina Siegl made two saves in the losing effort.

“We lost to the better team today,” head coach Pete Showler stated. “We didn’t take care of what we need to and as a consequence of that the result it what it is.”

The ‘Lopes got the scoring started in the 28th minute. Cassie Beckwith knocked one past Siegl to give GCU the 1-0 lead. Grand Canyon held the advantage in shots in the first half 9-5. The Vandals slimmed the total shot margin to 16-10 with their second half efforts.

Idaho (3-10-0, 3-3-0 WAC) got its best scoring chances late in the game. In the 70th minute freshman Edna Ibarra hit the second crossbar of the day for the Vandals. Minutes later senior Chelsie Breen sent a header high off a Katie Baran corner kick. In the 85th minute Darcy sent another Baran corner high off her header chance. Kavita Battan’s header off a JP Burgess corner opportunity sailed high over the net in the 86th minute.

In the final attempt to get on the board Pease forced GCU keeper Catherine Lena to make the last of her three saves on the day in the 87th minute.

Grand Canyon (3-10-1, 2-5-1 WAC) got an insurance tally when Chelsea Santos’ free kick sailed over Torell Stewart and into the back of the net.

Idaho will return home to take on CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 18. The Vandals will welcome Utah Valley to Guy Wicks Field on Sunday, Oct. 20.
