MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho soccer squad returns home on Friday to take on CSU Bakersfield at Guy Wicks Field. The Vandals are looking to get back on track after a 1-2 road trip. Utah Valley will be in town on Sunday to cap off the two-game home stand.
“We know a lot more about each team now,” head coach Pete Showler commented. “Bakersfield was a much better team than we heard and we saw that first hand. Now we know what to expect and we have to step on the pitch and compete with that.”
The Vandals saw both Bakersfield (3-10-1, 2-4-1 WAC) and Utah Valley (6-7-1, 4-2-1 WAC) two weekends ago, splitting the weekend bouts. Idaho went into Orem, Utah and shutout the Wolverines on their home turf, 1-0. Idaho has held scoreless in the past two meetings between the schools, dating back to 2012. The Vandals hold a 4-3 all-time series lead and are 2-1 against the Wolverines at home.
The Vandals faltered out of the gate against Bakersfield. Following their shutout victory at UVU the Vandals could not find the back of the net against the Roadrunners. Bakersfield notched the lone tally in of the match and improved its series lead to 3-1 all-time.
“We are trying to get the girls to play with more confidence and more consistency,” Showler said. “It is getting better every day. The confidence comes from within and they have to strive to achieve that.”
Friday’s game the first 100 fans through the gates will receive United Dairymen of Idaho limited edition trading cards.
Sunday is the Vandals annual Kick Cancer Game. Idaho will wear pink uniforms that will be up for auction throughout the game. All proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit Light a Candle Foundation. Light a Candle will give out 100 free pink mini-soccer balls to fans. Other fundraising efforts on Sunday will include a raffle and prize giveaways along with a bake sale to benefit the Light a Candle Foundation.
