|Vandals Set For Final Road Trip|
MOSCOW, Idaho—The Vandals kickoff their last road trip of the season Friday as they head east to take on Kansas City. Idaho will look to gain ground in the conference standings and position themselves into the conference tournament.
“These are two must win games,” head coach Pete Showler stated. “If we want to be in and around the mix for the WAC Tournament these are games we have to win.”
Kansas City (8-7-1, 5-3-0 WAC) currently holds the third seed in the conference rankings. In their late September matchup at Guy Wicks Field the ‘Roos played the Vandals into overtime. Alyssa Lloyd scored her first goal of the season to give Idaho the early first-half advantage. UMKC’s Taylor Bare scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 100th minute just before the end of the first overtime. UMKC snapped Idaho’s two-game winning streak.
“These teams know more about us and we know more about them after the first games,” Showler said. “I felt going into the Kansas City game we had played a good brand of soccer and I think we deserved to get something out of that. New Mexico State has been one of the better soccer playing teams out of the whole conference. It is unusual to see them in the position they are in based on the style of soccer they are playing.”
New Mexico State (4-10-2, 1-6-1 WAC) trails Idaho in the conference standings by five points heading into the weekend. The Vandals hold a 3-1-1 series lead over the Aggies, aided by the 3-2 win in the first matchup between the two teams in September. Breanna Wilson and Emily Ngan both scored their first goals on of the season and Elexis Schlossarek put in the game-winner to give the Vandals their second win of the season. Defender Nitalia Zuniga had her best offensive showing of her career, notching assists on all three goals.
Friday's kickoff is now set for 2:00 p.m. PT, moving from the original start time of 5:00 p.m. Sunday's game at NM State will get underway at 12:00 p.m. PT.
Idaho will finish up the road schedule Nov. 1, at Seattle U, before returning home to close out the regular season against the Redhawks on Nov. 3.
