MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho’s soccer program celebrated the 2013 season by handing out individual awards at the team’s year end banquet on Sunday.

The Vandal women were joined by friends and family at the Litehouse Center inside the Kibbie Dome to honor the past season, which included Idaho’s fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference Tournament bid.

Head coach Pete Showler dished out the awards following breakfast and a season highlight video.

Graduating junior Katie Baran and freshman Alyssa Pease shared the Golden Boot Award as the team’s top scorers. Both Baran and Pease scored three goals on the season. Senior Nitalia Zuniga earned the Golden Shinnie Award as the team’s top defensive player. Sophomore Reagan Quigley was voted the teams Most Improved Player, while senior Mary Condon was named the Most Inspirational Player by her teammates. Senior Chelsie Breen earned the Kathy Clark Scholar-Athlete award.

The Idaho Players’ Player of the Year award was split for the second year in a row. This season the players selected Breen and Baran, marking Baran’s second consecutive season with the honor. The award is based on a team vote after each game, deciding who had the greatest impact on the team on that particular day.

Also recognized in the ceremony were the conference award winners. Baran and freshman Gabby Leong both were honored by the conference and recognized at the banquet for their play in the WAC Tournament, being named to the WAC All-Tournament team in November. Zuniga and Breen were selected by the conference’s coaches to the All-Conference Team. Zuniga (second team) and Breen (first team) were handed their conference awards yesterday as well.

The Vandals featured 11 freshmen in 2013, and will look to build off this season’s accomplishments moving forward. Idaho only loses six to graduation. Baran, Breen, Emma Caringello, Zuniga and Breanna Wilson are all set to graduate this year. The six graduating players were presented with framed jerseys and their respective travel bags.

Showler and Co., will aim for their fifth straight trip to the conference tournament next season. The Vandals will join the Big Sky Conference at the start of the 2014 season.
