|Team Chemistry Key in 2014|
MOSCOW, Idaho—The Idaho fall sports schedule is fast approaching. The first regular season contest for the University of Idaho is Aug. 22 when the women’s soccer team takes on Seattle U. Head coach Derek Pittman has pushed his team through spring and fall workouts and have only a few details to polish off before traveling to Seattle.
Last weekend’s inaugural Silver & Gold scrimmage opened the eyes of Pittman and his coaching staff to areas that need minor tune ups before the games count for real.
“Coming out of the scrimmage last weekend we needed to focus a little bit more on our defensive organization,” Pittman stated. “We have started on how we are going to press teams and how we want to defend as an entire group. It has been great for some of our younger players to get to experience that and play with a little more intensity.”
The Vandals welcomed in 11 new faces this fall and only have four upperclassmen returning from 2013. The team is taking time off from the field to travel to Coeur’d'alene this weekend to work on team building. Pittman hopes this will help his young roster when it comes playing together as a unit.
“We have two seniors and four juniors who have done a great job leading,” Pittman said. “We need the sophomores and freshmen to get acclimated as soon as possible. We are going to have to rely on them to play and have success at different times. This weekend is all part trying to figure out where everybody fits in and building that family atmosphere.”
Upon returning to Moscow, the Silver and Gold will have three training sessions left in the preseason. The Vandals will practice on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday before departing for Seattle Thursday afternoon.
