|Vandals Set For EWU, Gonzaga|
MOSCOW, Idaho – After two hard fought battles last weekend, the University of Idaho will take on fellow Big Sky Conference rival Eastern Washington in a non-conference match up Friday at Guy Wicks Field. Rounding out the weekend the Vandals will travel to Spokane, Wash., Sunday to face Gonzaga.
“I feel really good, I think our team learned a lot from the weekend,” head coach Derek Pittman said. “We focused on things we can control. We got back to work this week and prepared ourselves for EWU.”
EWU (1-1-0) dropped their season opener to Fresno State, 2-1, in overtime play to open the season. They then came back to blank CSU Bakersfield, 3-0. Friday’s match marks the 18th meeting on the pitch against the Eagles. This meeting won’t be the final time Idaho and EWU battle on the field during the season; the two will faceoff against each other later in the year in conference play.
Gonzaga (2-0-0) started out the season with a road sweep beginning with a 2-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield. The Bulldogs also won their match against Fresno State shutting out FSU, 3-0. Gonzaga has its first 2-0 start since 2009.
Pittman, no stranger to Gonzaga, spent his last four years as the associate head coach for the Bulldogs before taking over at Idaho this year. Although he is returning to his previous home field on Sunday, he hasn’t given the match a whole lot of thought.
“Gonzaga is a place that I have fond memories of and I am excited to go back and play,” Pittman said. “But at the end of the day we have to take it one game at a time.”
The Vandals face off against Eastern Washington Friday at 5 p.m. PT at Guy Wicks Field. University of Idaho Vandal scarves will also be available at Friday’s game for $10.
