MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho women’s soccer team opened up the season playing to a 0-0 draw against the University of Oklahoma Friday evening at Guy Wicks Field. The Vandals enter this season with 13 newcomers, and expect to see growth through the season.

“There were some good things on both sides of the ball,” head coach Pete Showler said. “There is an awful lot of learning still to go on. We have seen what we can do when we work hard for each other. We will break down the film and we will get better at it.”

Offensively the Sooners came out strong, totaling 17 shots in the exhibition. The combination of the defensive back line and goalies Marina Siegl and Torell Stewart helped keep Oklahoma (0-0-0) off the scoreboard. Idaho (0-0-0) was more aggressive offensively in the second half, showing more awareness on the field.

“I think since it was our first game we were kind of nervous,” junior midfielder Katie Baran said. “For the second half we talked to Pete and kind of figured out some of our kinks. I feel like we got a lot of things worked out especially in the center of the field. The second half was a lot better, but we still have a few things to figure out.”

The Vandals now have a week to prepare for their opening match at Weber State on Aug. 23.

“The flow of the game is going to change,” Showler stated. “Personnel is going to have to get used to playing together. That is going to be key. There is areas where—with communication we can step in different places and tidy things up a bit quicker.”
