DENVER – University of Idaho track and field athletes grabbed a pair of Verizon Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors on Monday after strong performances over the week of Jan. 23-29.
Vandal senior Andrew Blaser claimed the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honor, while sophomore Hannah Kiser was named Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Blaser (Meridian, Idaho/University of Louisville) cleared a career-best 15-9 (4.80m) in the pole vault, a season-best 6-3.25 (1.91m) in the high jump, an 8.45 in the 60m hurdles and came just half an inch short of a career best with a 21-11.75 (6.70m) in the long jump over the weekend at the Cougar Indoor.
Blaser’s high jump and pole vault marks rank second in the WAC this season, while his hurdle time ranks third and his long jump is fifth.
Kiser, a second-year Vandal from Wenatchee, Wash. (Wenatchee HS), won both the 800m and mile at the Cougar Indoor. She ran a 4:44.31 mile to break the former meet record held by Vandal great Dee Olson by a seven-second margin, then won the 800m a short while later with a time of 2:13.96.
Kiser’s mile time, converted to 4:42.41 for track size, is a personal best, leads the WAC, ranks 22nd in the NCAA and is the third-fastest in Idaho school history. Her converted 800m time of 2:12.96 is also a career best and is the second-fastest in the conference this season.
The two awards bring Idaho’s indoor WAC Athlete of the Week tally already to five after the Vandals claimed three two weeks ago following the WSU Open. The award is the first of Blaser’s career and the first of Kiser’s track and field career. She was a three-time WAC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week in the fall.
Blaser and Kiser lead Idaho into action this weekend as the Vandals host a pair of home meets. The Vandal Indoor will be on Friday, starting at 6 p.m., while Saturday’s Idaho Indoor Open starts at 11 a.m. Both meets will be held at the Kibbie Dome.
