DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference honored two University of Idaho track and field athletes on Tuesday with Verizon WAC Athlete of the Week honors after their record-setting performances during the week of Feb. 6-12.

Hannah Kiser, a sophomore from Wenatchee, Wash. (Wenatchee HS), was honored with her second WAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honor after breaking the all-time WAC record and the Idaho school record in the women’s 3000m on Saturday at the Husky Classic.

Kiser’s 9:07.23 in the 3k puts her at sixth in the NCAA this season and meets the NCAA automatic qualifying standard, which books her first career NCAA Indoor Championships bid. It’s also the best in the WAC this season by a 31-second margin.

She followed up that performance by cruising to a six-second win in the women’s mile on Sunday at the UW Open in a time of 4:46.70, her second-best of the season in the event. Kiser now holds the WAC’s top times in the mile (4:42.41) and 3000m (9:07.23) and has the second-fastest 800m (2:10.65).

Klas broke his own Idaho school record in the men’s pole vault on Saturday at the Husky Classic and jumped up to seventh in the NCAA after clearing 17-9.75 (5.43m). He tied for second in the event and was the top collegiate finisher in the competition.

He now holds the top vault in the WAC this season by 19 inches and is the conference’s only vaulter to clear the 17-foot barrier.

The honor is the second this season for Kiser and the third for Klas. In all, Idaho has been honored 10 times with weekly WAC honors this indoor season.

Vandal track and field will be in action this weekend with its final home meet of the year at the Vandal Collegiate on Friday and Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.
