DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference honored a pair of University of Idaho men on Tuesday as its Verizon WAC Men’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the week of April 16-22.
Senior Stephane Colle earned his first career outdoor WAC Track Athlete of the Week honor, while Levkiv, a sophomore, earned his second Field Athlete of the Week honor of the season.
Colle, a first-year Vandal from St-Eustache, Quebec (Concordia), ran a WAC-leading time of 14:05.03 in the 5000m on Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays. The time is the fastest by a Vandal in 30 years and puts him at second in school history in the event. It’s also the fastest by a WAC runner since 2006.
His time in the event ranks 33rd in the NCAA West Region so far this year and is the third-fastest by a Canadian this season. The time also moves Colle into ninth all-time in the event for his home province of Quebec.
Levkiv, a redshirt sophomore from Renton, Wash. (Hazen HS), hit a two-foot, four-inch personal best of 57-7.75 (17.57m) in the shot put on Saturday at the Beach Invitational to move into ninth all-time at Idaho in the event.
Levkiv’s throw is the best in the WAC by a nearly four-foot margin and ranks 26th in the NCAA West Region so far this year. He posted a mark of 54-2.5 (16.25m) in the same event on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational and also threw the discus 149-5 (45.55m) on Friday and 151-1 (46.05m) on Saturday.
The two awards give Idaho’s men and women a total of five weekly WAC honors during the outdoor season to go along with their 10 from the indoor track and field season. Idaho’s men have claimed the last four consecutive Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors between Levkiv (twice), junior Mike Marshall and senior Andrew Blaser.
Colle and Levkiv lead the Vandals to Spokane this weekend, where the team will compete at the Duane Hartman Invitational on Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College.
