LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Idaho women's golf team has accomplished the almost unheard of by winning its third tournament in four tries this fall.

This week, the Vandals overcame a three-stroke opening day deficit to win going away over first-round leader UC Irvine at the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational at New Mexico State. Idaho had rounds of 296-287-288-871 to finish at seven-over par for the 54 holes. Irvine was second at 878 with San Diego State third at 880.

Four Vandals - led by Kayla Mortellaro's runner-up finish, were in the top 12.

"Today, I truly felt like this team had the confidence to win," said coach Lisa Johnson, whose team won its first two tournaments before struggling last week and rebounding this. "The hardest thing to overcome is to learn how to win. ... We've been able to compete in the third round whereas last year we didn't. That's the biggest difference between this year and last."

The Vandals were ranked 45th nationally by GolfStat.com prior to the tournament but should climb after winning over #13 Arizona, #35 Irvine and #42 Baylor.

The sophomore laden-team - senior Amanda Jacobs is the only upperclassman, rallied from three down after the first round to win by seven. Mortellaro's runner-up finish came after a closing 67 left her at six-under 210 for the tournament - four strokes back of medalist Christine Wong of San Diego State. Jacobs and Teo Poplawski were a four-over 220 and tied for ninth, while Frida Nilsson had her best college tournament with a tie for 12th at 221. Annika Karlsson finished in a tie for 77th at 239.

"We've always had four pretty good scores," Johnson said. "It's different to find the words to describe (winning three tournaments). It's amazing."
