|Lozano wins Lyle Pearson|
MOSCOW, Idaho - Members of Idaho's men's and women's tennis teams had success competing in the Lyle Pearson Labor Day in Sun Valley, Idaho over the weekend.
Idaho sophomore Vicky Lozano won the women's singles draw, and also teamed up with Vandal freshman Sophie Vickers to win the doubles draw.
"Vicky obviously had a great tournament winning both the singles and doubles," Idaho women's tennis coach Dan Pollock said. "She seems very motivated this year, and her game style makes her a very dangerous opponent for anyone. I can't wait to see how her and the rest of the girls progress this semester, they're all very excited and raring to go."
It was an all-Vandal final in the women's doubles draw, as Molly Knox and Bety Flores advanced to the finals before falling to Lozano and Vickers. Knox also advanced to the semifinal in singles before falling to Lozano.
"It is great to see the girls out playing tournaments so early in the school year and looking to sharpen up their match-play, even before we start official practice," Pollock added.
On the men's side, Dmitri Perevoshchikov advanced to the singles semifinals, while Abid Akbar made it to the quarterfinals. A couple Vandal tandems squared off in the men's doubles semifinal as Perevoshchikov and Jose Bendeck teamed up to beat Akbar and Andrew Dobbs before falling in the finals.
"This was another opportunity for players to go out on their own and get some strong open competition," Idaho men's tennis coach Jeff Beaman said. "From the results posted, every guy down there played some quality matches. I was especially impressed with Abid going a close three sets with BSU's No. 1 player in the quarters and Dmitry making the semi's and playing a former All-American from BSU close."
Both Vandal teams will compete in the USTA Campus Showdown in Moscow on Sept. 9.
