|Vandals fall in WAC opener|
FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 14 Fresno State men's tennis team was too much for Idaho as the Bulldogs rolled to a 6-1 victory in Idaho's Western Athletic Conference opener Monday night.
Idaho's Abid Akbar fell 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot to Remi Boutillier, the No. 14 singles player in the country, and the Vandals also lost straight-sets decisions at the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles spots. Cesar Torres lost a third-set tiebreak at the No. 5 singles spot while Andrew Dobbs picked up Idaho's only point of the match, a three-set win at No. 6 singles.
In doubles play, Dobbs and Akbar won 8-4 at No. 2, but Fresno State won the point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spot.
"There were some strong points in our match against a very strong Fresno State team," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "Andrew had a great day with both his singles and doubles play."
The loss is Idaho's third straight, and drops the Vandals to 8-9 on the season.
The Vandals will face Arizona in Boise on March 17 before resuming WAC play against Nevada on March 23 in the opening round of the Boise State tournament. That event concludes March 24.
