Idaho – The Idaho men’s tennis team had a tough go of it at the Boise State
Spring Break Tournament over the weekend, going 0-3 in the eight-team event
with losses to Nevada, Utah and Marquette.
The Vandals
fall to 8-13 on the season and have dropped seven consecutive matches. Idaho fell
4-2 to Nevada in a Western Athletic Conference match to drop the team to 0-2 in
WAC play to start the tournament. Idaho’s Abid Akbar fell in three sets at No.
1, and Nevada clinched the match victory with wins at the top four singles
spots. Cesar Torres and Alan Shin picked up wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.
Against
Utah, the Vandals got off to an early lead as Akbar and Andrew Dobbs clinched
the doubles point with a 9-8 victory at No. 2 after Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos
Salazar fell 8-5 at No. 1 and Marius Cirstea and Filip Fichtel won 8-5 at No.
3. Akbar win a three-setter at the top singles spot despite losing 6-1 in the
first set, but Utah won the remaining five singles matches to earn the 5-2 win.
The Vandals
again won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 against Marquette but
only Ramos Salazar and Shin were able to win singles matches, as the Golden
Eagles stole a 4-3 win. Ramos Salazar won in straight-sets at No. 3 singles,
while Shin won a three-setter at No. 5.
The Vandals
return to action next weekend when they face UT-Arlington on March 31 and WAC
foe New Mexico State on April 1, in Las Cruces, N.M.
