|Vandals shine at Showdown|
MOSCOW - The Idaho men's and women's tennis teams hit the court at the University of Idaho Campus Showdown over the weekend, and Vandal players won both the men's and women's draws of the USTA open event.
Junior Beatriz Flores won the women's draw with a victory over teammate Almudena Sanz, and senior Abid Akbar won on the men's side, as the teams prepare for the start of collegiate competition later this month.
"The event went really well and our guys got a lot of good sets in against a variety of opponents," said Jeff Beaman, Idaho Director of Tennis and head coach for the men. "Most of our guys had quality wins in the event and it was nice to see Abid win it to start off his senior year."
The Vandal men start collegiate play Sept. 21-23 when the team will split between the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas and the Eastern Washington Fall Classic in Cheney, Wash.
The Idaho women open Sept. 14-16 at the WSU Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash.
"Our players got some good match practice from this tournament before they head in to their first college event next week," Idaho women's coach Dan Pollock said. "It's good to see Bety coming up with some strong wins, as she put a lot of work in to her game and her conditioning over the summer."
