|Five Vandals win on day one|
LAS VEGAS - The Idaho men's tennis team had a successful first day at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, as five of eight players advanced in the main singles draw, and two of four doubles teams advanced in the doubles draw.
Abid Akbar, seeded 13th in the singles draw, won his first two matches to advance to the round of 16, where he will face Denver's Jens Vorkefeld, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, on Friday. In doubles play, Akbar teamed up with Marius Cirstea, and the 9th seeded duo won its round of 32 doubles to advance to Friday's round of 16.
"Abid has been very impressive," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "Being a highly seeded player in both singles and doubles, he is living up to his seeding."
Also in doubles play, Jose Bendeck and Cesar Torres won their first two doubles matches to reach the round of 16.
In other singles action, Torres, Cirstea, Matt Oddonetto and Jake Knox each won their opening round match before falling on the opening day.
"It's been a good run with a lot of guys progressing in a very tough draw," Beaman said.
The tournament continues Friday and runs through Oct. 21.
