Abid Akbar, seeded 13^th in the singles draw, won his first two matches to advance to the round of 16, where he will face Denver's Jens Vorkefeld, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, on Friday. In doubles play, Akbar teamed up with Marius Cirstea, and the 9^th seeded duo won its round of 32 doubles to advance to Friday's round of 16.

"Abid has been very impressive," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "Being a highly seeded player in both singles and doubles, he is living up to his seeding."

Also in doubles play, Jose Bendeck and Cesar Torres won their first two doubles matches to reach the round of 16.

In other singles action, Torres, Cirstea, Matt Oddonetto and Jake Knox each won their opening round match before falling on the opening day.

"It's been a good run with a lot of guys progressing in a very tough draw," Beaman said.

The tournament continues Friday and runs through Oct. 21.
