FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - Idaho tennis players Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea came up short in their bid to advance in the main draw of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Thursday morning, falling 8-4 in their opening-round match to California's pairing of Ben and Riki McLachlan.
The McLachlan brothers went on to win their round-of-16 match to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday.
"It was a tough first match against a good team," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "They played really well and definitely beat us. We have the ability to not only compete better than we did against a team of that level but beat them."
Akbar and Cirstea will resume play in the consolation doubles draw on Friday morning at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
"Moving forward, we hope that in the consolation we will play up to our potential and pick up some good wins," Beaman said.
